Thomas A. Rintoul (he/him)

I'm a PhD student in Compuational Astrophysics at Cardiff University. My PhD focusses on cosmological simulations of massive galaxies, with specific focus on the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) - the hot, thin, multiphase reservoir of gas that populates a galaxy's dark matter halo. The first part of my PhD focussed on the role of magnetic fields in ram pressure stripping of satellite galaxies in the CGM. I am currently investigating the role of anisotropic thermal conduction in the CGM of massive galaxies. My PhD work forms part of the SURGE (Simulating the Universe in Refined Galactic Environments) project.

I am also a member of the KILOGAS collaboration - an ALMA program observing the cold molecular gas of low-redshift galaxies - where I am a member of the theory working group. My work with KILOGAS seeks to use cosmological simulations to understand the origin of observed gas kinematic asymmetries.

First 1st Author paper accepted by MNRAS

My first paper titled "The role of magnetic fields in ram pressure stripping of satellite galaxies in the circumgalactic medium around massive galaxies" has been accepted for publication by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

National Astronomy Meeting 2025

In July 2025, I attended the National Astronomy Meeting at Durham University. I co-chaired a well-attended session on Multiphase Gas in Galaxies. I also presented a talk on my recent paper exploring the role of magnetic fields in ram pressure stripping of satellite galaxies in the circumgalactic medium.

First paper on ArXiV

My first paper titled "The role of magnetic fields in ram pressure stripping of satellite galaxies in the circumgalactic medium around massive galaxies" is now available to read in pre-print on ArXiV. The paper has been submitted to MNRAS. Comments welcome.
